Artist Biography

Sextape are a five-piece post-punk band from Johannesburg South Africa that blend hard hitting post punk with garage rock and noise. A gut punch of poignant lyricism, backed by dirt drenched guitars, huge fuzz sections, bright melodic pangs of guitar melodies, and a driving, violent rhythm section.

Their live performances are engaging, challenging and have been described as a force of nature, toeing the line between melody and dissonance to tell stories of true experience, tragedy and their reflections of their lives and experiences in the city of Johannesburg.

Their aggressive, industrial take on post-punk reflects the decay and dilapidation of their city, while their use of strong vocal and instrumental melodies reflect the hopes and dreams of their fellow countryman. Sextape’s music stands as a love letter towards the lives and people of Johannesburg. Earnest, Stark and Romantic.

“We want to sound like the cracks in the concrete that you see in the city, and the light that shines through them.” Muses Lucy Crowley, the singer of the four piece, “My mom always used to quote Leonard Cohen – “there’s a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in.” I think that’s pretty fitting for how we sound and what we represent. There’s a kind of hope-in-spite-of-everything attitude in our music.”
